dana, when you think of that press conference that wayne lapierre had, defiant in the face of the shootings with newtown. this is not about a negotiation, is it? >> no, i think the secret service is going to have to check him very thoroughly when he gets to the gates of the white house. but, no, this really isn't about a policy. they know what the range of policy options are and are evidently pursuing a very broad one. this is about a show. and that's a good thing. you need to have these sorts of events to build -- or to continue enthusiasm for this issue. if has faded a bit since the massacre late last year. and i think there's the administration's trying to maintain some renewed interests in this. it's still going to be a very difficult sell in this congress. you know, you're talking about the governors of connecticut, new york and new jersey. well, that's a very small part of this country. there's going to be a lot of resistance on capitol hill. >> yeah, so part of the strategy is to meet with victims to get some of the families of victims out there. i talked yesterday with roxanna green

that clip, incidentally, was played for the nra's wayne lapierre thursday on fox news. actually he evaded the question, but to credit of fox news's meagan kelly, she persisted and repeatedly asked, what does he say to those 11 children alive today? repeatedly, as you'd expect, he fell back on the same tired talking points. >> meagan, people that know guns, you can change magazine clips in a second. there's no evidence that, you know, that anything would have changed. i mean, the fact is if you're a homeowner, though, and you have someone coming through your door in the middle of the night, why should you be limited to three rounds or four rounds like mayor bloomberg wants to do? >> joining us now is karen finney, a former dnc communications director, and soon to be a colleague/host here at msnbc, and julian epstein, a democratic strategist. welcome to you both. karen, he just doesn't have an answer, does he? he just does not have an answer to that question about limiting magazine clips, does he? >> no, no, he doesn't. that's why he threw in, you know, bloomberg, right?

we have seen donald trump and, mitch mcconnell, kelly ayotte, and paul ryan and wayne lapierre, and we have everybody in there, right? is that a time for the conservatives to look forward to a launch pad going toward 2016 or a time to bash the president, and first is kelly ayotte spoke and mentioned benghazi. >> well, it is interesting, because it needs to be a time for the republicans to look ahead, and the lineup that you just showed, reflects some of the problem. there is a certain schizophrenia in the party, and there are so many stakeholders here and so many ideologies competing and you see it in the discussions around immigration and the discussions around gay marriage and foreign policy and the opinions are sort of all over the map, and really, this time i think that it needs to be used for the republicans to solidify, with who are are we? what kind of party are wie goin to be and position themselves well. >> one of the speakers is mitch mcconnell this morning and this is what he said. >> i want you to take a look at the stack of paper behind e me. it is the most powerful argume

now, i'm not questioning wayne lapierre's motives. i believe that he is a fervent believer in the second amendment and a fervent believer of background checks a decade ago after columbine but at the end of the day this is about money. i believe the guys, the companies that are making so much money on guns, that have made millions and millions of dollars off the deaths of these 20 little children in newtown and the panic caused by a lot of what wayne lapierre said, they are are irrational at the end of the day. they are left wing and in the end it's all about money in hollywood. haven't they already figured out we got to give one here? we have got to give on the background checks? i'm just saying rationally as a business person, a lot of hedge funders have bought these gun companies. do rational business disis, okay, 92% of americans are against this w we need to -- are against our position. we need to give them this position before the next bad thing happens or next time they are going to go after our assault weapons? >> sure. i would

what kind of reception will wayne lapierre get at cpac? >> clearly he's preaching to the choir, so i suspect he'll get a standing ovation, a sustained round of applause. he'll probably say what he's said, it's an assault on second amendment rights. i believe in the right very strongly to bear arms. hour, there should be a back ground check. hour, i don't see the need for semiautomatic weapons in the household. that makes no sense to me. so what i think is wayne lapierre will spread more gasoline on the fire, if you will, in preaching to the choir. >> is that what you think happens? >> i think so. wayne lapierre said a decade ago he was for background checks. now there's a poll out that shows even in states like montana, the majority, about 78% of gun owners are for background checks but wayne lapierre -- >> why is that? why does there seem to be such a disconnection between nra and its membership? >> because it's the lobbyist group in washington and the spokespeople. they're stopping commonsense gun safety laws going in effect. they're my
